A hack saw is one of the most common types of hand saws and was initially used to cut metal. The rip-cut saw is rather aggressive and leaves behind a somewhat rough edge. This type of saw is used to cut with the wood grain. It gets its name from the slice it makes in the wood, parallel to the wood grain.
